Parker School hosts alumni reunion

WAIMEA — More than 50 alumni, former faculty and current employees gathered for Parker School’s alumni reunion Aug. 6. Graduates and families from the class of 1984 through the class of 2016 came together to tour the school, reminisce through past yearbooks and catch up with one another on the school’s front porch.

    KAPAAU — The Hawaii Institute of Pacific Agriculture shared Monday that the Mahiai Scholarship Award is available for Kapaau-based Kohala High School and Waimea-based Kanu O Ka Aina high school students.

    WAIMEA — West Hawaii Mediation Center, along with the Department of Education, is offering a free one-day Restorative Practices Foundations workshop open to the public from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. this Tuesday at Mana Christian Ohana in Waimea. It will provide an overview of restorative justice principles and theory, restorative practices in schools, implementation guidance and a review of resources.

    KOHALA — Kohala Elementary is one of five schools in the state that will open new public pre-kindergarten classrooms in the 2018-19 school year. Schools were selected based on a competitive application process.

    From 5-7 p.m. Aug. 23, students and their families are invited to attend the free Blue-Zones friendly dinner. Classroom visits with teachers will also be included.

    From 9 a.m.-noon Sept. 10, residents can learn how to make kid-friendly, tasty, affordable snacks using fresh ingredients at Malaai Garden, adjacent to Waimea Middle School (WMS). The nutrition lesson will demonstrate how food can be delicious and nutritious.

    Waimea resident David Nesting graduated with a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from Fort Lewis College in late April.

    NORTH HAWAII — The Hawaii Center for Food Safety (HCFS) is excited to share a helpful new resource for school garden teachers. The Hawaii Pollinators and School Garden Toolkit — a free resource for teachers to integrate into their school garden curriculum — is live and ready for download.

    More than 300 parents, friends, family members, students and faculty attended Waimea Elementary School’s Summer Art &Song Fest Wednesday morning at Kahilu Town Hall. The children’s artwork was displayed while students received P.E. awards and performed nine songs in the choir during the program. A banquet lunch was served for all following the event.

    WAIMEA — Parker School’s debate finalists participated in the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama June 18-23. Students Susie Krall, Kirk Hubbard, Zoe Vann and Anna Gaglione participated in policy debate and Hunter Kalahiki-Arnbrister’s program was in oral interpretation.

    The event will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 5 at Waikoloa School, sponsored by the PTSA. Activities will include two waterslides, several carnival games, food trucks, and free cotton candy and popcorn.
